JB Elmore
My main concern is to really get the portrait
life like and make the image look real. I know I have something when
it starts to come to life.
I have been creating hand-drawn portraits for years. It started when
I picked up a pad of paper and pencil and tried my luck at my first
portrait when I was in high school. I have been a commercial artist
for over 25 years enjoying every minute of my craft, which I call
Photographic Realism.
Every time I start a new project, it's a new challenge. I take
great strides to capture the true essence of each portrait I work
on. The hardest part of the entire portrait is getting the face to
look right. If the eyes are not quite right, you might as well start
over. It is important to pinpoint every little detail of a person's
face. It goes a little bit beyond a sketch. The larger the picture
is, the easier it is to capture these little details.
It often takes six to seven hours to finish one portrait with a single
person. The time is usually doubled when more than one person is in
the drawing. The finished portrait is worth every minute! You can
have extra photographs printed, but a penciled portrait is one of
a kind.
Older people have a lot of character. Younger people are so expressive.
Whether it be a grandparent or a young child, these portraits help
capture memories, or a stage in life, in a unique way. To give the
portrait that finished look, the work is matted and framed. What a
perfect gift, especially for those that are hard to buy for!
